10 Names of God and What They Mean

What do you usually call our Father? You probably call him “God” or “Lord,” but do you know what those names mean or where they come from? There are a plethora of meaningful names for the one that we serve. I recently started a She Reads Truth Bible study plan about this exact topic, the names of God. What I found intriguing is that each name is unique, highlighting a specific characteristic of God’s being. Through the plan, I learned more about who God is and why the Bible refers to Him in so many different ways. Let’s dive into ten names of God and what they mean.

 1. Lord of Hosts or Jehovah Sabaoth

Description:  According to She Reads Truth, “The Hebrew word tsaba, or “gathering of people,” is frequently used in the Bible to describe armies preparing for war. When paired with the name of God in Yahweh Tsebaoth, it reveres Him as being over hosts of angelic armies.” Likewise, “hosts’’ refer to the heavenly creations of God in English. This name highlights God’s ability to command the angelic beings who serve Him. Fun fact: Hannah was the first (recorded) person to use this name in 1 Samuel 1:11.

Scriptures: Haggai 2:4, Psalm 24:10, Malachi 3:17, Psalm 46:10–11

2. Elohim

Description: Sometimes also shortened to “El” or “Eloah,” Elohim is another name for “God.” It refers to Him as the creator of all things. The first sentence of the Bible includes this name! Christianity.com says that Jesus also used this name when He cried out on the cross, “Eloi, Eloii, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” The Bible Project has a video dedicated to explaining why Elohim is more of a title than a formal name of God.

Scriptures: Genesis 1:1, Genesis 1:27, Psalm 109:26

3. Adonai

Description: Adonai means “Lord,” in Hebrew. It emphasizes God’s position as the Master and, in turn, our position as servants. When we use this name, we take a posture of humility, remembering that God sits on the throne as the ultimate ruler of both heaven and earth. Apparently it is found in the Bible over four hundred times! One of my favorite worship songs is called, “Adonai” by Chris Renzema. It’s definitely worth the listen if you enjoy relaxing worship music! Scriptures:

 Colossians 1:16, 1 Corinthians 8:5–6, Deuteronomy 10:17–21

4. Jehovah-Rapha or Yahweh-Rapha

Description: Jehovah Rappa, found often in the Old Testament, means “The Lord Who Heals.” We serve a merciful God who is not only willing to heal our physical ailments but also wipe away our spiritual, emotional, and mental burdens. One touch of His hand can heal the most painful suffering.

 Scriptures: Exodus 15:26, Psalm 103:3, Psalm 147:3, Isaiah 30:26

5. Jehovah Shalom

Description: Jehovah Shalom emphasizes the fact that God is peace. When life gets chaotic, remember to call on the God who offers tranquility and calm. He holds the peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:6).

Scriptures: Judges 6:22–24, John 16:33

6. Immanuel or Emmanuel

Description: Immanuel means “God is with us.” You’ve probably seen it spelled both ways depending on what Bible translation you like to read. Unlike some other names of God, Immanuel is not a formal name but rather a description of the nature of the Messiah. He, in his very nature, is close to us. It is often used in relation to Jesus, the third person of the Holy Trinity who became flesh.

Scriptures: Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 8:8, Matthew 1:23

7. Yahweh or YHWH Description: According to She Reads Truth, Yahweh “is distinct from other names of God because it is self-revealed. It is the intimate, covenantal, relational name of God.” This name is revealed to Moses by God himself in Exodus.

Scriptures: Exodus 3:14–15

8. Jehovah Jireh

Description: Jehovah Jireh means “The Lord Who Provides,” teaching us that God will take care of all of our needs. Another translation of this name is “The Lord Who Sees” or The Lord Who Will See To It,” according to Bible.org. To me, Jehovah Jireh is the embodiment of what Jesus says about provision in Matthew 6:28–32:

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you — you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.”

Scriptures: Genesis 22:12–14, Genesis 22:14

9. Name: Abba

Description: Abba means that God is our Father. I love this name in particular because of how personal it feels. It reminds me that I truly am and always will be his daughter, made in His image and likeness. Calling Him Abba reminds me that I can ask Him for anything, tell Him anything, and that He loves me no matter what. Scriptures: Romans 8:15 “So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, Abba, Father.”

10. El Eloyn

Description: El Eloyn means “God Most High.” It underscores God’s sovereignty, reminding us that He reigns supreme. Unlike false idols, God is living and active. She Reads Truth claims that El Eloyn and Elohim are closely related although they are different names.

Scriptures: Genesis 14:20, Psalm 57:2, Psalm 78:35

Let’s Pray!

Abba, we thank you for your everlasting love and for the personal relationship you are forming with each one of us here on earth. We thank you for your peace, Jehovah Salom, for the peace that surpasses all understanding. Lord of Hosts, we stand in awe of your great power, the way that you send your angels to protect and care for us. We thank you for sending your son Jesus to save us and to know us. Thank you for being present with us in this moment and in every moment. Thank you for revealing these names and titles so that we might understand your nature more. We know that your ways are higher than our ways and your thoughts higher than our thoughts but we just enjoy getting to know you Father. You are a good, good Father. I praise your Holy name and declare that our relationship will only grow deeper and better. In Jesus’ Name I Pray, Amen.
