Title: Eyes on Eternity Key Scripture:
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” — Colossians 3:2 (NIV) In a world buzzing with distractions—news headlines, social media updates, financial pressures, and personal responsibilities—it is easy for our minds to be consumed by the here and now.
Yet Colossians 3:2 gently but firmly calls us to a higher focus: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” This isn’t a call to ignore reality or disengage from our responsibilities. Rather, it’s a call to live with eternity in view. Paul, writing to the Colossians, was urging believers to think from a heavenly perspective, especially in light of the preceding verse: “Since you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above...”
(Colossians 3:1). The apostle reminds us that our identity has changed—we’re not just earthly beings striving for success or survival; we are citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:20), seated with Christ in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 2:6).
What we set our minds on shapes our character, decisions, and emotions. When we focus on earthly things—status, possessions, fleeting pleasures—we’re prone to anxiety, envy, and burnout. But when we intentionally dwell on eternal realities—God’s love, grace, holiness, His purposes, and the hope of glory—we’re anchored in peace and purpose. Jesus Himself taught this principle when He said, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).
The focus comes first; provision follows. A heart set on heaven lives well on earth. C.S. Lewis captured this beautifully when he wrote: “Aim at heaven and you will get earth ‘thrown in’; aim at earth and you will get neither.” Let us examine the direction of our thoughts today. Are we living as though this world is all there is?
Or are our hearts and minds anchored in the realities of heaven? Prayer: Lord, help me to lift my gaze above the noise and temptations of this world. Teach me to set my mind on things above—on You, Your truth, and Your purposes. May my life reflect heaven’s values even as I walk this earth. Amen.
Reflection Questions: 1. What “earthly things” most easily consume your thoughts? 2. What practical steps can you take to realign your mind with things above? 3. How does your eternal identity in Christ shape the way you handle daily challenges?
